After some final instructions from John and an explanation of the purpose and meaning of hand signals, we were off down the river. Initially aiming for a breakout point just below the first rapids. This spot was ideal for beginners to learn the basics of moving water technique, such as ferry gliding.

Coaching

Finer points

Break out was successfully achieved by all paddlers and the opens and kayaks quickly assembled with their appropriate coach. The opens on Jem and the Kayaks on John, for instruction on the techniques to be attempted. First up an introduction to ferry gliding, the lesson was then put it into practice, with the coaches make observations on the finer points of implementation.

As can be seen from the photo right for some of our party this was the first time on as river.

Tom looking cool

While some of the more experienced paddlers played and concentrated on looking cool, the newcomers diligently practiced.

Even though the water levels were quite low, there was still enough to teach an important lesson about edging to newcomers and several unwary kayakers were caught out.
