Altham to the Gannow Tunnel 28th Mar 2004

A group led by Jem Lees set off from Chatburn Water (The Lodge), looking forward to what this paddle might consist of (the tunnel). When we finally arrived, it struck Neville that if ever the new Dr. Who series needed extras that we could well be them. We needed to have some sort of light with us as this was part of the days adventures, because we will encounter a half a mile long tunnel close to the end of the paddle.

Under the experienced eye of Jem and Robert Anderson, the kayakers were soon on the water warmed up and waiting for Jonathan and the rest of the coaches/drivers to get back to the start point and onto the water. With the lesson on water dynamics and boats finished we were soon on our way.

After about half an hour, Jonathan realized that we had lost a Canoe! It was later revealed that the couple had stopped so Dave could take some photos for his project at work about Graffiti, which of course was followed with some jokes about Dave never stopping working. This obviously lightened up the mood of the Paddlers.

Much to some of the paddlers delights (naming no names) we stopped for lunch Just outside the motorway junction to Halifax, opposite a plot designed for keeping animals. Some of the younger paddlers were soon to name the potbelly pig across the canal "Molly", for some reason?

Back on the water we were soon into the outskirts of Burnley and getting close to the tunnel. We were soon outside the tunnel entrance; it was torches at the ready. Some of the canoes were sent through to stop barges going through! Paddling was quite hard in the dark especially as my torch batteries were running out, it was quite an eerie paddle especially as there was constant dripping on my head.

A well-recommended paddle!!
