Greenber to East Marton Trip 25th Jan 2004

Shortly we passed through a spectacular wooded section cut through limestone between Green Bank and East Marton. In fact it was so spectacular that I forgot to take a photograph. Fortunately there is a very nice web site, http://www.penninewaterways.co.uk, that is full of information on the Leeds and Liverpool. The site even has virtual tours of canals. A picture of the section I missed can be found [here].

The observant reader may have noticed that the trip was advetised to end at East Marton. However, when Jem reconnoitred the trip it was decided to extend it to Bank Newton.

Travelling northward from Green Bank up to our disembarcation point at Bank Newton, the canal becomes very bendy. Repeatedly turning east then west, as the builders were forced to follow the contours of the land.

As the group approached the end of the journey, they we were all looking forward to stretching our legs. Only one thing stood in the way of completing a most enjoyable trip.....

The Swans on the stretch before Bank Newton were not happy about sharing their section of the canal with us.

Swans are very territorial especially during the breeding season, which normally begins around March. It was surprising this early in the year for them to be displaying territorial behaviour.

But with a bit of expert distraction, the group were quickly past and in keeping with all good adventures, home in time for tea.

All in all a splendid way to spend a Sunday.
