Jem Lees very kindly offered to organise and lead Clitheroe Canoe Club's first canal trip of 2004. The trip was along a very scenic stretch of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Starting at Greenber Field just North-East of Barnoldswick (map reference SD888482 [map] - OS Map Landranger 103) and finishing at East Marton (map reference SD912528 [map]). A journey of approximately six kilometres.

The turnout was impressive, around 20 members, parents and partners met at the Club house. From there the group decamped to the car park at Greenber Field locks in a variety of vehicles.

An objective of trips like this is to encourage the broadest possible participation, so a mix of kayaks and open canoes were used. Parents and partners are particularly welcome, not only to help with transport, but also perhaps try a paddle in an open canoe or simply sit in an open and watch the scenery pass by as someone else paddles.

There was some initial consternation amongst the early arrivals as they discovered, as can be seen from the photographs, that the canal itself at Greenber field had been drained by British Waterways for Dredging.

The lack of water did not perturb group leader Jem Lees. After a short portage around the closed section of towpath with the kayaks and open canoes.

The group were soon back on course and followed the towpath leading to the northern most lock gate, the intended start point, where the canal was full of water.
