August
2004 News Letter
Welcome
back from summer holidays [back to top]
Now that
the summer holidays are drawing to a close and everyone is returning
from distant shores, coaching sessions will soon be starting again.
We will continue with Fun Session only Saturday afternoons until the
end of August, starting at 2 O'clock, finishing at 3:30. Coaching
sessions will start on Saturday 4th September, and as before the timings
will be:-
2:00 - 3:30pm Coaching Session
3:30 - 5:00pm Fun Session.
It will no longer be necessary to book in advance, just turn up on
the day, again costs for members will be as before, £4 for each
session, or £5 for both.
The clubhouse,
equipment, grounds, and lake are regularly maintained throughout the
year. Every now and then it is necessary to undertake major work or
time consuming maintenance tasks which are better undertaken by groups
of people. Volunteers are sought to attend a working party at Chatburn
Water on Sunday 26th September. As a departure from the usual working
party, there will be a barbeque lunch for all who help.
The day will start at 10:00am and we aim to finish before 7:00pm.
Any time that can be given to the working party would be greatly appreciated
even if you can only spare an hour!
Swallows
and Amazons part II (Return To Peel Island) [back
to top]
Following
the tremendous success of the last trip to Coniston, a return trip
has been organised for Sunday 5th September. This will be an excellent
day out for all the family, parents are positively encouraged to come
along, help with transport, and either have a paddle or be a passenger
in an open canoe.
We will be meeting at Chatburn Water at 9:00am and plan to return
before dark! Make sure to bring a picnic, and if the weather is anything
like last time you will need some sunscreen (fingers crossed!). The
trip is open to members and their families, and there will be no charge.
The club
is continuing to amass a good deal of lost property. If you think
you have left an item of kit at the club, please feel free to ask
to have rummage in the lost property box and hopefully claim your
lost property.
In
a departure from the usual convention, this year's Presentation Evening
will take place next year! Rather than struggling to squeeze the event
into everyones' pre-Christmas diaries, the management committee have
decided to have the event after Christmas.
The Presentation Evening will be on the evening of Saturday 5th February,
at Langho Village Hall. The event will comprise of the presentation
of prizes to club members for their outstanding and not so outstanding
performances during the year, a bar, and dancing to a ceilidh. More
details and information on how to book your tickets will be available
nearer the time.
This
years annual general meeting will take place at the clubhouse on Monday
11th October, and will start at 8:00pm. The AGM is a constitutional
requirement of the club and is an opportunity for club members to
satisfy themselves that the club has been properly managed during
the course of the prior year, for changes to be made to the club's
constitution, and for the election of members to the management committee.
If you would like to take a more active role in the management and
development of the club, and would consider election to the management
committee, please contact any member of the current committee.
If you
are a 2 star or 3 star paddler aged 16 or over and would like to think
about becoming a coach, then contact Andy Noblett (on 01254 248457)
who will discuss this with you. The club is always on the look out
for people willing to train and qualify as a coach in order to pass
on the skills and enjoyment of our sport to others. Not only is coaching
fun to do, but training to become a coach will provide you not only
with paddling specific skills but with generic coaching skills which
you can use in other aspects of your life.
The costs
of training to become a coach are subsidised, 1/3 by Lancashire Council
for Voluntary Youth Services, and 1/3 by the club (for junior coaches
under 18 - 2/3 by the club).
