3rd May - Paddle Power Scheme
As
many of you will be aware the BCU Star Test awards changed towards
the backend of 2007. The new star test syllabus is in some ways
more physically demanding and brings in moving water skills at 3*.
While there are no mandated age limits, BCU guidelines suggest star
tests are best suited to those joining the sport around age 14-16.
For younger people a new scheme has been developed called Paddle
Power.
Paddle
Power been designed to meet the needs of young people. Its aim is
to encourage more young people to come into and stay in the sport,
providing progressive development and rewarding achievement in a
wide range of areas. The scheme has recently been finalised and
now comprises 5 Awards:
PaddlePower Start – an entry level award suitable for taster
sessions or as part of a series of sessions.
PaddlePower Passport – 4 progressive levels based on 24
topics which can be grouped into Safety Awareness, Paddling Skills,
Varied Experiences, and Supporting Knowledge.
PaddlePower Discover – has 4 levels to take the young paddler
to the equivalent of 2 star standard.
PaddlePower Explore - 3 different levels take the paddler
on an extensive journey exploring the great variety of Paddlesport,
with topics focused on participation in events and journeys in the
competitive and non-competitive disciplines.
PaddlePower Excel - 3 levels to test the paddler on all
elements of paddlesport including being responsible for self and
others, participation in journeys, coaching sessions, training,
events/competitions in a variety of disciplines, background knowledge
of the sport; access, rules, environmental, nutrition and goal setting.
The
paddle power scheme is equivalent to BCU star test award and is
accepted as a prerequisit entry qualification for those who may
wish to enter the coaching scheme.

Winter
Coaching Coaching
We
will be holding winter coaching sessions every other Saturday on
the River Irwell at Burrs Activity
Centre, Woodhill Road, Bury, Lancashire, BL8 1DA.
Sessions
will begin on Saturday 12th January and will focus on river-running
skills, and work towards the new BCU 3* kayak award. Due to the
nature of the river and the cold weather, a full-length wetsuit
or dry-pants/dry cag are required. It is recommended that all paddlers
wear a semi-dry/dry-cag. Paddlers should be comfortable wearing
a spraydeck, and be paddling to at least 1* level.
Showers
(20p) and changing facilities are available. We will meet at the
club at 9.30am to collect boats and any required kit, and we hope
to be at the Burrs for 11.00am.
Session
will last 2 - 3 hours, and we will return mid/late afternoon. Cost
will be £5.00 per session. Dates on the calendar so far are:
January:
12th, 26th;
February:
2nd, 16th; and
March: 1st, 15th, 29th.
If
there is sufficient demand, more sessions may be available. Contact
Lou for more details or to book your place email louisehelencasson@hotmail.com

From
the Chair ....
Following
the AGM, we now have a new committee.
I was nominated as chairman/woman/person (whatever you want to call
me, I don't mind), and I happily accepted. I hope to continue previous
efforts and move the club forward. Neville is now vice-chairman
following his hard work as chair for the last two years. Marie is
continuing as membership secretary, Mark Byrne will continue as
treasure and Kirsten will continue as secretary. Sarah is now an
'ordinary member' and is joined by Nick Bennett who we welcome to
the committee. Rory Brown is our new junior rep, and a big welcome
to him also.
Our
first meeting was a coiuple of weeks ago and if you have any suggestions
or questions, then give me a call (01253 313818 or 07815 855309)
or drop me an email.
As
most of you will now know, the syllabi for the star tests has now
changed, as has the coaching structure. All existing L2 and L3 coaches
now need to pass the new 2* to be able to assess it.
This
is due to the new syllabus being a generic award that includes open-boating.
Andy is currently running courses for existing coaches, and you
will only need to do the open-boat components as you've done the
kayaking bits!
Some
coaches have already done the course, and I can say they were all
pleasantly surprised by how much they enjoyed the day. I was one
of them, and I'm looking forward to jumping in an open sometime
soon.
All
coaches all need to fill in an assessor registration form from the
BCU. This is on their website [here].
A copy of the form can be found on the forms and download page [here].
Please remeber that the BCU need up to date copies of you first
aid certificates
Next
coaches 2* course is on Sat 24th November.
Places are filling up fast, so if you're interested email Andy at
a.noblett@tiscali.co.uk
The club will subside the cost for coaches who want to do the course,
making the cost to you £15 (club also pays £15).

Sunday
25th February - River
Leven Trip - Ideally, to paddle you should be of 2* standard
and competent on the River Calder/Burrs, or have already paddled
the Leven with the club.
We
will be meeting at 9.00am at the Club, and aim to be on the
Leven for 11.00am. Club boats and kit will be available for those
who need it, although you must have a wetsuit/dry kit, due to the
weather. No shorts & t-shirts I'm afraid!! There will be a cost
of £2.00, payable to the event organisers when we get there.
Also, please let me know if you need transport for your boat, yourself
or both. Alternatively, if you can take boats, people or both, please
let me know how many. We will be running the river twice as it is
quite short, so you'll need to bring a packed lunch. If you would
like to come, please let Louise Casson know by email:louisehelencasson@hotmail.com,
or
phone 07815 855309 by
Thursday tea-time, as we need to book places on Thursday
evening. Please be aware that places may be limited depending on
coach/paddler ratio, and also transport, but we will do our best
to ensure we can take those who want to go.
If
you are not up to 2* standard, or have little or no river experience
but would like to do a river trip, please let me know. I will then
organise a novice trip to the River Calder or the Burrs in the next
few weeks.
