Saturday
3rd May - Paddle Power Scheme
As
many of you will be aware the BCU Star Test awards changed towards
the backend of 2007. The new star test syllabus is in some ways
more physically demanding and brings in moving water skills at 3*.
While there are no mandated age limits, BCU guidelines suggest star
tests are best suited to those joining the sport around age 14-16.
For younger people a new scheme has been developed called Paddle
Power.
Paddle
Power been designed to meet the needs of young people. Its aim is
to encourage more young people to come into and stay in the sport,
providing progressive development and rewarding achievement in a
wide range of areas. The scheme has recently been finalised and
now comprises 5 Awards:
PaddlePower Start – an entry level award suitable for taster
sessions or as part of a series of sessions.
PaddlePower Passport – 4 progressive levels based on 24
topics which can be grouped into Safety Awareness, Paddling Skills,
Varied Experiences, and Supporting Knowledge.
PaddlePower Discover – has 4 levels to take the young paddler
to the equivalent of 2 star standard.
PaddlePower Explore - 3 different levels take the paddler
on an extensive journey exploring the great variety of Paddlesport,
with topics focused on participation in events and journeys in the
competitive and non-competitive disciplines.
PaddlePower Excel - 3 levels to test the paddler on all
elements of paddlesport including being responsible for self and
others, participation in journeys, coaching sessions, training,
events/competitions in a variety of disciplines, background knowledge
of the sport; access, rules, environmental, nutrition and goal setting.
The
paddle power scheme is equivalent to BCU star test award and is
accepted as a prerequisit entry qualification for those who may
wish to enter the coaching scheme.

How
does it work?

Power award will need at most 4 assessments.
What
does it cost?
The cost are the same as the star tests. The log book will cost
around £2.50 and once it has been completed can be
sent away to the BCU who will register your acheivement. The BCU
will also send you a certificate currently at no additional cost.
When
can I start? CCC will be starting the scheme on Saturday
3rd May. You will need register at the club and bring £2.50
for your coaching log book.

Saturday
7th June
- Awards Evening alternative, BBQ & Fun Day?
As
you will be aware we unfortunately had to cancel our awards Evening.
The Committee are proposing an alternative. We are suggesting that
we use Saturday June 7th as more paddlesport oriented celebration.
There will be a series of games on the water and off, as well as
a BBQ. The club will provide food and refreshments and members their
friends and family are invited to bring any additional nibbles and
drink and probably a comfy camping chair may be sensible.
Alcohol
will be allowed on the strict-understanding that no one who has
consumed alcohol will be allowed on the water.
We
are going to need your assitance in a number of areas:
- food preparation and cooking;
- depending on numbers we may need BBQ equipment;
- suggestions as to events we can run on and off the water; and
-
just in case we have British Summer camping gear such a cooking
tents.
If
you can help please contact Marie Heyworth on 01254 822440.
The
Fun Day will begin at 2 o'clock and will go on until dusk, at which
time some members may wish to venture of into Clitheroe for the
evening. Food will be served from around 4 o'clock and the awards
ceremony will be around 6.00. The cost will be normal session
fees and to help with numbers so we don't run out of food too early
Marie will be selling tickets at Saturday Sessions. Friends and
Family are welcome and vegetarians will be catered for, just let
Marie know when you buy your tickets.
